Self Reliance
By ourselves is evil done
By ourselves we pain endure
By ourselves we cease from wrong
By ourselves become we pure

No one save us but ourselves
No one can and no one may
We ourselves must walk the path,
Buddhas merely show the way.

Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano

Venerable Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano graduated from Dartmouth College, where he majored in English. He subsequently worked as an actor and writer. In 1987 he ordained in Bangkok at Wat Mahadhatu and took the name Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano . He has spent time in Thailand and Sri Lanka, and currently resides in the United States.

Bhante Nyanasobhano is a published author. His books include:

  1. Available Truth :Excursions into Buddhist Wisdom and the Natural World

Published 2007: In Available Truth, he guides us further along the path. His unqualified embrace of the Buddha’s worldview—in intelligent and deeply thoughtful prose—distinguishes his work from many other Western Buddhist books. Along with reflections on mindfulness, impermanence, and the end of suffering, Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano is not afraid to delve into the topics of rebirth, karma, nonvirtue, and the roles of reasoned faith, ritual, and monasticism, revealing their continuing relevance for today's seeker. His patient awareness of the workings of the mind and the natural world will enable readers to deepen both their practice and their lives.

  2. Longing for Certainty : Reflections on the Buddhist Life
Published 2003: In the same lyrical voice that met with such acclaim in Landscapes of Wonder, Bhikkhu Nyanasobhanoa invites us to look upon the natural world with new eyes and to find the truths of the Buddha's teachings in our immediate experience. Attentive to the subtle power of language, Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano choose his words in these essays with such artisty and care that Longing for Certainty resounds with sparkling, fluid clarity.

  3. Landscapes of Wonder :Discovering Buddhist Dhamma in the World Around Us

Published 1998: Landscapes of Wonder is a collection of eighteen literary essays on the philosophy and practices of Buddhism. Though not conceived of as an introduction to Buddhism so much as an application of its teachings to modern life, it effectively summarizes most of the main areas of Buddhist teachings. In doing so, Bhikkhu Nyanasobhano takes one of the oldest traditions in Buddhism and presents it in its most natural setting: the natural world in which we live. His examination will appeal both to practitioners and those interested in broadening their knowledge of Buddhism through an enjoyable literary exploration.

  4. Night and Morning with Bhikkhu Tissa : Two Dialogues on the Dhamma

This book uses the didactic method of an imagined dialogue between a young American seeker and a Buddhist monk to examine how the Buddha's teaching answers the fundamental question: Is there any prospect for a deeper fulfilment and peace than everyday pleasures? The young man and the venerable bhikkhu talk from the evening through the night and into the morning.

The tone of the book is natural and relaxed, accurately rendering the sincerity of a conversation between a sincere seeker and a spiritual guide:

This book is available online from the Buddhist Publication Society.

Additional publications include:

  1. Nothing Higher to Live For: A Buddhist View of Romantic Love
  2. Two Dialogues on Dhamma
  3. Bhikkhu Tissa Dispels Some Doubts
  4. Radical Buddhism
