Loving-Kindness / metta

When we practice Loving-Kindness (metta) we perform 528 unique exercises: 12 types of beings x 4 types of metta is 48 exerecises plus 12 types of beings x 4 types of metta x 10 directions is 480 exercises. This is a total of 528 exercises of Loving-Kindness.

When we practice Compassion(karuna), Sympathetic Joy(mudita) and Equanimity (upekkha) we perform 128 unique exercises for each of the practices: 12 types of beings x 1 practice area (karuma, mudita, upekkha) is 12 exercises plus 12 types of beings x 1 type of practice area x 10 directions is 120 exercises. This is a total of 128 exercises per practice area.

With 528 metta practicee, 128 karuna, 128 mudita, and 128 upekkha there are 912 unique exercises in the Four Noble Practice areas. However, when performing these practices in a group we often will use an abbreviated form.

The abbreviated chanting is found below:

Sabbe satta, Sabe pana, Sabbe bhuta, Sabbe puggala, Sabe attabhava pariyapanna

May all beings, may all breathing beings, may all creatures, may all persons, may all with bodies 

Avera hontu, Abyapajja hontu, Anigha hunto, Sukhi attanam pariharantu,

Be free from enmity, be free from distress, be free from anxiety, Live happily

 Dukkha muccantu, Yatha laddha sampattito ma-vigaccantu, Kammassaka

Be relieved of suffering, Not loose what they possess, May they have kamma as their own  

Sabba itthiyo, Sabbe purisa, Sabbe ariya, Sabbe anariya,

May all women, May all men, May all noble ones, May all not noble ones

When practicing we focus our mind on 12 broad categories of beings:

  1. Satta – all beings
  2. Pana – all breathing beings
  3. Bhuta – all creatures
  4. Puggala – all persons
  5. Attabhava pariyapanna – all those with bodies
  6. Itthiyo – all women
  7. Purisa – all men
  8. Ariya – all noble ones
  9. Anariya – all non-noble ones
  10. Deva – all dieties
  11. Manussa – all human beings
  12. Vinipatika – all those in unhappy states

Pali Compass / disaya

When we practice sending metta, Loving Kindness, to beings we send our energy in all 10 directions. Each of the 10 directions are based on the traditional directions of a compass.compass_pali_large
We send these thoughts in 10 directions (disaya): An illustrative compass is available

Puratthimaya disaya – East direction
Dakkhinaya disaya – South direction
Pacchimaya disaya – West direction
Uttaraya disaya – North direction
Puratthimaya-anudisaya – East-South direction
Dakkhinaya-anudisaya – South-East direction
Pacchimaya-anudisaya – West-North direction
Uttaraya-anudisaya – North-East direction
Uparimaya-disaya – Upward / Above direction
Hetthimaya-disaya – Downward / Below direction
